Lab Tests

FUNCTIONAL TESTING
Your doctor says: “Your lab test came back normal. I can’t find anything wrong with you.” There is probably nothing more frustrating than to have practitioners and lab tests tell you there’s nothing wrong-especially when you know there is. You may be tired all the time, have chronic gastro-intestinal problems, PMS, blood sugar imbalances, sleep disorders, depression or other symptoms that can sap your energy and make life miserable. Functional testing can give you the answers! Functional tests tell you how the body is functioning, whereas traditional blood tests assess pathology (disease). While traditional testing has a role in diagnosing illness, any imbalance tending toward disease can be evaluated through functional testing long before overt symptoms manifest and health is compromised allowing prevention. We are focusing on only a few of the functional tests that are available; some of the newest and most revealing ones. Chronically Ill Patients Want an Answer, Not a Label - Organic Acids Profile Has Them!
Identifying the cause of chronic illness is the first step toward achieving a favorable outcome. Integrative clinicians rely on the Organic Acids Profile to reveal the nutritional and metabolic basis of patient symptoms, just as traditional practitioners might use a serum chemistry to establish a diagnostic baseline. The Organic Acids Profile provides a view into the body's cellular metabolic processes and the efficiency of metabolic function. Identifying metabolic blocks that can be treated nutritionally allows individual tailoring of interventions that maximize patient responses and lead to improved patient outcomes.

Organic acids are metabolic intermediates produced in pathways of central energy production, detoxification, neurotransmitter breakdown, or intestinal microbial activity. Accumulation of specific organic acids in urine often signals a metabolic inhibition or block. This may be due to a nutrient deficiency, an inherited enzyme deficit, toxic build-up, or drug effect.

From a single urine specimen, the Organic Acids Profile provides important information in the areas of:
  • Vitamin and mineral insufficiencies
  • Amino acid insufficiencies like carnitine and NAC
  • Oxidative damage and anti-oxidant sufficiency markers
  • Indicators to assess detoxification sufficiency
  • The best functional markers of B-complex deficiency
  • Neurotransmitter metabolites to assess CNS function
  • Mitochondrial energy production assessment via citric acid cycle components
  • Methylation sufficiency status
  • Lipoic acid and CoQ10 sufficiency markers
  • Specific dysbiosis markers for bacterial and yeast overgrowth
Environmental Pollutants Panel
Environmental Pollutants Panel - A urine analysis for assessment of patient exposure to common environmental and occupational chemicals. Chronic exposures to a number of occupational and environmental pollutants are a growing concern in today's industrialized communities as their effects on human health are profound. Many have been linked to a variety of pathologies including neuropsychological, and neuropsychological dysfunction, leukopaenia, dyspnoea, anemia, and certain cancers, to name but a few.Chemicals in the report include metabolites of:
  • Xylene
Xylene, a ubiquitous petrochemical solvent, is first oxidized via p450 enzymes then conjugated with glycine to for 2- and 3-methylhippurate.
  • Toluene
  • Benzene
  • Trimethylbenzene
  • Styrene
  • Phthalic Acid Esters
  • Phthalates are used in the manufacture of plastics to allow for flexibility and to soften resins. Not only that, but it is found in everything from makeup to detergents, shampoos to time-released pharmaceutical drugs. This toxin is a well known endocrine disruptor as well as causing neurological and developmental disorders. It can interfere with tryptophan metabolism resulting in an increase in quinolinic acid, a pro-inflammatory and neurotoxic compound. Phthalates have also been implicated in abnormal fetal development, especially in male fetuses.
  • Parabens
  • Parabens are a widely used family of preservatives found in many cosmetic, pharmaceutical and industrial products. Parabens have inherent estrogenic and other hormone related activity and have been implicated in the growth and development of human breast cancer cell lines.
  • A listing of sources of each chemicals tested is provided with the patient's report.
  • Price for this test is reduced if ordered with the Organic Acids Profile.
NEUROTRANSMITTER and HPA TESTING: BALANCING THE EFFECTS OF STRESS
Research has shown that the effects of stress are the reason for the over-whelming increase in doctor visits for a wide variety of acute and chronic ailments. Stress creates chemicals in the body that affect all systems including neurotransmitters; the messengers that control body functions.

One of the most exciting new tests available today evaluates major neurotransmitters and the HPA (Hypothalamus, Pituitary, Adrenal) Axis using both urine and saliva samples collected at home. The samples are tested in the European laboratory where the test was developed. This test is performed at a very reasonable cost with results in approximately 14 days. By using products that are formulated to balance the test results, most individuals achieve not only relief from but resolution to many previously unresolved health conditions.

AMMINO ACID ANALYSIS:

Tool for evaluating dietary protein adequacy and assimilation, as well as metabolic imbalances underlying many chronic disorders.

ELEMENTAL ANALYSIS, HAIR:
Accurate means of gauging chronic toxic exposure and specific nutrient element deficiencies in the body.
These imbalances can trigger such conditions as chronic fatigue, depression, thyroid irregularities, cardiovascular disease, and ADHD.

WOMEN’S HORMONAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT:
Looks at hormone levels through out full 28 day cycle.
Can help eliminate root causes of disorders such as PMS, menstrual irregularities, and infertility.

MEN’S HORMONE PROFILE:
Assesses the circadian activity of bioavailable testosterone.
Provides insight into disorders such as reduced libido and muscle mass, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis.

PLEASE NOTE:
These tests are not intended to diagnose or cure any disease. We suggest you share the results of any test with your primary health care provider for that purpose.
Tests ordered through our office are NOT insurance reimbursable.
